It’s All Greek To Me…
Frequently
Asked Questions
1. How can Brazos Valley Panhellenic Alumnae
Association, hereafter referred to as BVPAA, help me to participate in
Rush/Membership recruitment?
BVPA can
help provide you and your parents with sorority information and notify Brazos
Valley Alumnae groups of your intent to
participate in membership recruitment (rush).
Please send the following to our email address:
- electronic copy of your resume
- picture of yourself in jpg format (faceshot)
- scanned copy of your transcript (please delete your social security number if this information is contained on your transcript)
You must also register with your college
Panhellenic.
2. Why be a member in a sorority?
Sororities
emphasize scholarship, promote leadership, practice good citizenship, encourage
loyalty and show concern for others. By
working together, local sorority women promote philanthropy, sorority ideals
and continued lasting friendships made in college.
3. What is membership recruitment?
Recruitment
is frequently referred to as RUSH - and that’s what it feels like!
It is 3-4
rounds of parties, now called events, intended for you and the sorority women
to meet and for you to learn more about sorority life. The emphasis is on conversation and getting
to know each other. The period of recruitment varies, but usually lasts a few
days. Universities conduct recruitment
prior to the fall semester or deferred later in the fall or spring. Recruitment varies greatly from college to
college. It is important to understand the specifics of recruitment at your
college. You can do this by reviewing the college Greek Life website.
4. What happens when I
register with my college Panhellenic?
When you
register with your college or university Panhellenic, they will send you
information about what you can expect during the recruitment process on that
campus. Recruitment is a mutual
selection process. The information you will receive this summer from your
college or university Panhellenic association usually has dress guidelines and
photo examples.
5. What are your responsibilities as a sorority
member?
Sorority
membership means commitment. When you join, you will make a moral
commitment to uphold your sorority’s standards as well as commit time and money. You will be asked to attend meetings & workshops,
participate in service projects, attend social events, pay dues, and maintain a
certain grade point average. You might also be asked to live in the house for a
period of time.
6. What is a Legacy?
Each
sorority has its own definition of a “legacy.”
It is generally defined as a daughter or sister of an initiated member.
Some sororities also recognize a granddaughter, step daughter or step sister. Sororities try to extend every courtesy to
legacies and try to get to know them, but sororities cannot guarantee legacies
invitations or membership. At times
there are more legacies entering Rush/Recruitment than a college chapter has
membership openings. Legacies must meet
the same qualification standards that non-legacies meet. If you are a legacy to
any sorority, make sure to list them on your resume.
